ERODE: Congress candidate E V K S Elangovan won the byelection to the Erode East assembly constituency with a margin of 66,087 votes.
At the end of the 15th and final round on Thursday evening, the former Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president secured 1,09,906 votes while his opponent K S Thennarasu of the AIADMK got 43,819 votes.
The byelection was necessitated by the death of Elangovan’s son and Congress MLA E Thirumahan Everaa on January 4. Thirumahan died of a cardiac arrest at the age of 46. Thirumahan defeated his opponent Yuvaraja of the Tamil Manila Congress with a margin of 8,904 votes in the 2021 Tamil Nadu assembly election. Elangovan crossed this margin in the second round of counting itself.
Elangovan said the entire credit for his impending victory in the bypoll went to the chief minister M K Stalin. “My victory was an assured one. But I did not expect such a huge margin,” he told the reporters. The former Union minister said he was not in a state of mind to celebrate. “All I want to do is continue the work left by my son,” he said
Stalin told the reporters in Chennai that the bypoll result was a sign of people’s overwhelming support to the Dravidian model government.
