Braves Travel to McPherson on Monday

The Braves won their second straight game with a 74-72 upset of no. 4 Southwestern College on Saturday night in Wilson Field House. Ottawa shot 47.5 percent from the floor, 23.5 percent from behind the 3-pt line, and 70.6 percent from the free throw line. Dreary Hull led OU with 21 points. He also had three blocks and two steals. Deondre Buggage scored 13 points and had four assists. You Bland finished the game with 12 points. He also led OU with nine rebounds.

The win was OU’s first over a top 10 opponent since 2019-20 when the Braves upset no. 8 Oklahoma Wesleyan University in Wilson Field House on Nov. 13, 2019. Ottawa defeated OKWU 89-87.

Deondre Buggage leads the Braves in scoring (16.4) and assists (2.2). Amil Fields is OU’s leader in rebounding (7.9) and steals (1.5). Elijah Mason leads Ottawa in blocks (0.6) per game.

The Braves are 3-5 on the road this season and 3-4 in KCAC road games. Ottawa is scoring 77.4 points per game while opponents are scoring 79.5 points per game. OU is shooting 42.4 percent from the floor, 30.5 percent from behind the 3-pt line, and 76.6 percent from the free throw line. Opponents are shooting 45.4 percent from the floor, 31.5 percent from behind the arc, and 68.6 percent from the charity stripe.

In OU’s nine wins this season, the Braves are scoring 82.7 points per game and holding opponents to 73.4 points per game. Five players are averaging double figures in OU’s victories: Dreary Hull (18.8), Deondre Buggage (18.2), You Bland (13.6), Ian Moore (10), and Amil Fields (10).

In their 10 losses this season, Ottawa is being outscored 88-77 by opponents. OU is shooting 40.6 percent from the floor, 29.9 percent from the free throw line, and 72.3 percent from the free throw line. Opponents are shooting 48.9 percent from the floor, 37.9 percent from behind the 3-pt line and 70.9 percent from the free throw line.

This season Ottawa is averaging 79.8 points, 37.2 rebounds, and 11.5 assists per game. OU is shooting 42.8 percent from the floor, 31.6 percent from behind the 3-pt line, and 72.4 percent from the free throw line.

Ottawa is ranked 22nd in the NAIA in field goals attempted per game (65.8), 24th in free throws made per game (15.5), 34th in free throws attempted per game (21.4), and 42nd in defensive rebounds per game (27.9).

Monday is the 181st meeting between Ottawa University and McPherson College. The Braves lead the series 114-66 and is on a four game winning streak against the Bulldogs. The very first meeting between the two teams happened in 1910. Ottawa won the game 40-25.

The Braves won in Wilson Field House on Nov. 22 in the first meeting this season, 87-85 in overtime. It was the third overtime game between the two teams in the last nine meetings. In the win, Ottawa shot 43.2 percent from the floor, 37.5 percent from behind the 3-pt line, and 70 percent from the free throw line. The Braves had four players in double figures. Ian Moore and You Bland finished with 18 points apiece. Amil Fields had a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Deondre Buggage finished the game with 12 points.

Ottawa has won seven straight games at The Sport Center. OU’s last loss in McPherson was on Jan. 10, 2015. McPherson won the game 82-72.

McPherson College is 10-10 overall, 5-8 in the KCAC, and 5-5 at home this season. The Bulldogs have lost three straight games with losses to Kansas Wesleyan (86-72) on Jan. 14, Avila University (68-66) on Jan. 18 and at Oklahoma Wesleyan (70-53) on Jan. 21.

In the loss to the Eagles, McPherson shot 29.2 percent (19-65) from the floor, 36.4 percent (12-33) from behind the 3-pt line, and 50 percent (3-6) from the free throw line. Luis Rodriguez and Haven Ousley came off the bench to lead the Bulldogs in scoring. Both finished with 12 points apiece.

Owen Braxmeyer leads McPherson in scoring (12.8) and rebounding (7). Yaniel Vidal is MC’s leader in assists (2.3), KJ Marshall is the team’s leader in blocks (0.8), Braxmeyer is the Bulldogs’ leader in steals (26).

McPherson is averaging 76.2 points, 37.5 rebounds, and 12 assists per game. They are shooting 38.9 percent from the floor, 33.6 percent from behind the 3-pt line, and 67.2 percent from the free throw line.

The Bulldogs are ranked sixth in the NAIA in field goals attempted per game (70), 35th in 3-pt field goals made per game (9.1), 19th in 3-pt field goals attempted per game (27.1), 10th in offensive rebounds per game (13.2), 28th in turnovers per game (11.3), 16th in personal fouls per game (14.1), and 48th in opponent 3-pt field goal percentage (.308).

MC is averaging 73.9 points per game at home but on the road, the Bulldogs are averaging 78.5 points per game.

In McPherson’s wins, the Bulldogs are averaging 84.5 points per game and shooting 43.2 percent from the floor, 35.7 percent from behind the 3-pt line, and 64 percent from the free throw line. In their 10 losses, McPherson is averaging 67.9 points per game and shooting 34.4 percent from the floor, 31.6 percent from behind the 3-pt line, and 71.8 percent from the free throw line.

Since November the Bulldogs scoring average has dropped every month. November: 81.4, December: 72.4, January: 71.2.
