Let’s begin with our top story. Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan took to Instagram on Thursday, 5th January to wish his friend and Pathaan co-star Deepika Padukone a very happy birthday. Khan shared a new poster of Deepika from the upcoming Yash Raj Films actioner with a caption that read, “To my dearest Deepika – how you have evolved to own the screen in every avatar possible! Always proud and always wishing for you to scale new heights. Happy Birthday and lots of love.” In the poster, a bruised Deepika is seen holding a pistol in hand and looking away from the camera. Pathaan, helmed by Siddharth Anand releases on January 25th.
“Moving on. Filmmaker Karan Johar doesn’t hold back in speaking his mind in public, and as someone at the centre of Bollywood, he has a lot of opinions about every facet of the industry. In an appearance on a new podcast, Karan spoke about several issues, such as the declining box office revenue of Hindi movies in 2022 and how big budgets can often spell doom for films.
Karan appeared on the Masters’ Union podcast, where he admitted that Telugu is the ‘most profitable’ regional industry in the country. Karan also said that it no longer makes sense to launch newcomers with big theatrical releases, because even though people flock to see celebrities in real life, that doesn’t translate to ticket sales.”
“Filmmaker Hansal Mehta has revealed he will start shooting for his much-anticipated series Gandhi in late 2023.
Backed by Applause Entertainment, the series is based on historian and author Ramachandra Guha’s books — Gandhi before India and Gandhi-The Years that Changed the World. The series will star Pratik Gandhi as Mahatma Gandhi. It marks the director-actor duo’s third collaboration after Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story and Baai. Siddhartha Basu has been roped in as the project’s historical consultant, factual advisor and creative consultant. Hansal Mehta’s other upcoming projects include the series Scoop and Scam 2003 and an untitled film with Kareena Kapoor Khan.”
Meanwhile, last year, Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar announced the war drama Gorkha, based on war hero Major General Ian Cardozo, the first war-disabled officer of the Indian Army to command a battalion and a brigade. Now, the producer of Gorkha, Aanand L Rai, has announced that the film has been postponed due to a few ‘technical and factual’ issues. The filmmaker also clarified that if Gorkha will be made, it will be led by Akshay Kumar. His statement comes amid speculations about Kumar walking out of the film due to factual errors in the story. Akshay Kumar and Aanand L Rai had earlier collaborated on Atrangi Re and Raksha Bandhan.
“Actor Rashmika Mandanna, who will be seen in the Bollywood film Animal opposite Ranbir Kapoor and Anil Kapoor, expressed her excitement for the movie. She also opened up about working with them and with director Sandeep Reddy Vanga.
In a recent interview, Rashmika said, “I think what has happened after shooting for Animal is that it has made me realise a couple of things as an actor. My choices of films are going to be different. I think the way I’m going to perform is going to be different. Because, this is all the influence of me working so closely with Sandeep sir, Ranbir, and Anil sir.”” Besides Animal, Rashmika Mandanna also has Mission Majnu with Sidharth Malhotra among her Bollywood releases this year.”
Actor Aditya Rawal hopes he can someday match up to the legacy of his father, veteran actor Paresh Rawal, with whom he says he has “hours and hours” of conversations about all thing art and artists. Aditya, son of actors Paresh Rawal and Swaroop Sampat, said that though he comes from a family of artists, he learnt at an early age that acting is no less than a “blue-collar job”– “there are perks, but one has to earn them by toiling hard”. Aditya will be seen in Hansal Mehta’s next, Faraaz. The thriller will be Aditya’s second feature after his 2020 acting debut Bamfaad. The actor said he aims to constantly do projects that help him shuffle genres and characters.
Actor Seema Pahwa regained popularity in the recent past with films like Gangubai Kathiawadi and Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, among others. Before she made it big, in the 1980s, Seema worked extensively in various Delhi theatre groups from a young age. In a recent interview, Seema recalled that it was during those days that she worked in the kind of theatre that was dubbed as “vulgar” at the time. In a chat with Rekhta Foundation, Seema shared that she was constantly looking for work that could pay her more money. That’s when she stumbled upon one such theatre group but Seema had no idea what she was performing on stage and shared that all their dialogues were “double meaning”.
Lastly, actor Sonam Kapoor, who mostly lives in London now with her husband Anand Ahuja and son Vayu, has sold her Mumbai home. The luxury apartment is located near the Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai and has been sold for a hefty price of Rs 32.5 crore. A discrepancy can be noticed in the reporting of how much she paid for the apartment in 2015, with figures ranging from Rs 17 crore to Rs 31 crore. Sonam will return to acting with Shome Makhija’s Blind, where she plays a visually challenged cop.
