NEW DELHL: External affairs minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday hit out at Congress for repeatedly questioning the Centre over border skirmishes with China, saying that “it was Narendra Modi and not Rahul Gandhi who has sent troops to LAC.”
In an exclusive interview to ANI, Jaishankar asserted that India has sent troops to the LAC in large numbers during border tensions with China amid Congress’s charge that the Centre is not doing enough to counter the threat.
On Congress’s allegation that neither PM Modi nor Jaishankar ever mentioned China in their statements, the external affairs minister said that India currently has the largest peacetime deployment in the history along the China border. He then enunciated the word “China”.
“If we were being accomodiative, then who sent the Indian Army to the LAC. Rahul Gandhi didn’t send them, Narendra Modi sent them,” Jaishankar said.
His response comes amid a volley of attacks from Congress, especially Rahul Gandhi, over the Centre’s response to Chinese aggression.
Rahul had said that the government must deal with China firmly and make it clear that “we are not going to tolerate them sitting on our land”.
The Congress leader had also claimed that China is preparing for “a war” and accused the Centre of trying to “ignore” the threat.
However, Jaishankar too has repeatedly countered Congress’s allegations.
Lashing out at Congress, the Union minister had earlier said that some people are deliberately spreading wrong news about the China issue knowing it is not true for politics. “By talking about some land, which was taken by China in 1962, they give the impression this happened recently,” he had said.
