‘Tripura has shown red card to chanda & jhanda’: PM Modi takes swipe at Left Front | Tripura Election News

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday took a series of potshots at the erstwhile Left regime in poll-bound Tripura, saying that rampant killings were reported in the state during the previous government.
Addressing a rally in Agartala, Prime Minister Modi said that the BJP government under Manik Saha has brought peace to the northeastern state.
Taking a sharp dig at the CPM leaders, PM Ways said that leaders of the Left Front government had “thought of themselves as kings and Tripura people as servants.”
“People of Tripura can never forget the chaotic days when Left Front cadres had taken hostage of every aspect of life,” he said.
He said that the youth and women of Tripura have shown the “red card” to ‘Chanda’ (donation) and ‘Jhanda’ (flag), alluding to the red colour associated with the Left Front.
He heaped praise on the Manik Saha-led BJP government in the state, saying that his happiness has doubled seeing the support for the double engine government of BJP.
“There is no family in Tripura that hasn’t received benefits of BJP policies,” he said, adding that Tripura efforts are being made to turn the state into a business hub and boost job opportunities.
Voting will take place in Tripura on February 16. The results will be declared on March 2.
In Tripura, the BJP appears strong but could face challenges from local outfits and a possible alliance between Left and Congress.
The Left had ruled Tripura for over 25 years before BJP came to power in 2018 in alliance with Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT).
In 2023, the main challenge BJP faces is from Tipraha Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA), headed by Pradyot Bikram Manikya Deb Barman.
It also remains to be seen whether the change of leadership (Manik Saha replacing Biplab Deb) will have an electoral impact on BJP.
