3 mild-intensity quakes in 12 hrs jolt Uttarkashi
Three earthquakes, all of slight intensity, jolted the seismically-vulnerable Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand within 12 hours on Sunday.
The first, a 2.5-magnitude tremor, was recorded at 12:45am in the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. The epicentre was in the Siror forest area of Uttarkashi, the National Centre of Seismology said. Another quake followed soon after in the same area, but the intensity was too low to record the magnitude locally, Devendra Patwaldistrict disaster management officer of Uttarkashi, told TOI.

At 10:10am on Sunday, another earthquake of 1.8 magnitude jolted the area. The epicentre was in the northeastern Uttarkashi. The depth of the tremor was recorded at 5km.
Uttarkashi falls in Zone V (maximum risk) of India’s seismic zonal map. Experts have been predicting that an earthquake similar in magnitude to the one that hit Turkiye is imminent in the fault lines of the state and can happen “any time”.
