10 ’90s Anime Characters With The Best Fashion Sense

[ad_1]

The ’90s were the golden age of fashion for anime, with blends of fashion subgenres including streetwear, cyberpunk, casual athletic, and iconic designer evening attire. Everyday pieces were often blended in with their superhero costumes, making unique and eye-catching silhouettes. Manga creators like Sailor Moon‘s Naoko Takeuchi, Yu Yu Hakusho‘s Yoshihiro Togashi, and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure‘s Hirohiko Araki all cited haute couture runway pieces in their character design.

Early ’90s anime was particularly fun because it still held on to plenty of influences from the 1980s, including dreamy floral pastels, high-waisted pants, slouchy socks and legwarmers, and cropped jackets and shirts. Luckily, fans can enjoy looking back on these ’90s anime characters who are fashion plates for their time.

10 Jotaro Has The Best Take On A School Uniform

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure OVA

Jotaro Joestar from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure OVA.

While the 1993 JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure OVA is far from receiving mass fan approval, especially as compared to the present adaptation, its fashion choices cannot be dismissed. The OVA suffers from trying to pack too much JoJo lore into a short runtime, but Jotaro’s character design makes up for some of the OVA’s missteps.

Jotaro wears a highly stylized school uniformwith a cerulean gakuran that stretches down to a trench coat length, which he wears unbuttoned. He also wears a bright red muscle shirt, double belts, and boxy, ’80s-style black trousers. The ’90s OVA has less of a focus on the chain on his shoulder and leans more into the lines of his trench coat.

9 Trunks Has Hair Like Jonathan Taylor Thomas

Dragon Ball Z

Trunks from Dragon Ball Z.

Dragon Ball Z‘s Trunks has a floppy lavender bob that’s similar to the “hero hair” that so many ’90s heartthrobs had, some examples being Skeet Ulrich in Scream and Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic. Trunks styles that with an ensemble of understated colors and contrasting lines.

Trunks wears baggy cargo pants belted at the smallest point of his waist and a blue jacket cropped high up to the ribs. His boots are yellow and have chunky straps similar to moon boots. Such an outfit could be easily replicated for street wear by anyone — perhaps minus the sword strapped across the back.

8 Ryo Saeba Dresses For His Figure While He Investigates Crime

City Hunter

Ryo Saeba from City Hunter.

City Hunter is about Ryo Saeba, a private detective, and it ran at the tail end of the ’80s. Ryo’s fashion is understated and encapsulates much of menswear heading into the start of the 1990s.

Ryo’s outfits are understated and mostly elegant, perfect for his long-limbed figure. Perfectly tailored, fitted jeans are his go-to, paired with a simple dark tee, always under a lighter button-down. The layers flow well and highlight his shoulders. Occasionally, he’ll swap out the button-down for a blazer or a puffy zip-up coat.

7 Misato Katsuragi Is Lovely In Violet & Red

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Misato Katsuragi of Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Misato Katsuragi of Neon Genesis Evangelion has a gorgeous selection of outfits, all in shades of crimson and scarlet, which complement her deep violet hair. Black ankle boots are her customary footwear, along with form-fitting sleeveless mini dresses and her cropped scarlet jacket.

Any other outfits Misato wears tend to be a variation of that silhouette, including purple blouses tucked into dark miniskirts and the occasional white heel. When she wants to dress down, she wears pastels in light fabrics. Her favorite cropped red jacket is undoubtedly the best part of any of her outfits.

6 Spike Spiegel Wears A Messy Suit Like No Other

Cowboy Bebop

Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop.

Excepting a large maroon puffer coat or a temporary disguise here and there, Spike Spiegel of Cowboy Bebop favors one outfit, which is ideal for a lazy space cowboy. Spike’s dress suit is a slim, classic cut in navy blue with a wide lapel.

Spike’s yellow dress shirt is always unbuttoned, and his narrow tie is loosened. Spike also tends to roll the blazer sleeves up just below the elbows, which was more popularized in the ’80s and ’90s. For footwear, Spike wears chunky black, heeled boots.

5 Millerna Aston Embodies The Modern Princess Look

The Vision Of Escaflowne

Millerna in The Vision of Escaflowne.

Millerna Aston of The Vision of Escaflowne wears a puffy pink blouse with gathered bell sleeves, a bow at the waist, and gathered flounces at the hip reminiscent of dress panniers. The blouse is not quite a shirt and not quite a dress; it’s more similar to a fusion of Victorian and Edwardian shapes.

Wearing clothes that were inspired by Victorian styles spliced with modernity were extremely popular in the ’90s and still carry on today in trends like cottagecore and princesscore. Millerna completes the outfit with black leggings and ballet flats.

4 Mamoru Chiba’s Green Blazer Is Timeless

Sailor Moon

Mamoru Chiba from Sailor Moon wearing a green blazer and grey paperbag trousers.

The ’90s Sailor Moon anime gives Mamoru Chiba several looks, some more timeless than others, but all extremely well-fitted and appropriate for the time. His mustard yellow and periwinkle trimmed long-sleeve button-up is one of the more unfortunate choices. Some of his outlandish pieces, like the pastel yellow, green, and blue color-blocked sweatshirt, look good though it seems like they shouldn’t.

But Mamoru’s best ensemble, and one of the best streetwear outfits in anime without question, is his olive-green blazer outfit, which he wears numerous times throughout the series. He pairs the hip-length green blazer with high-waisted gray paperback slacks, a black turtleneck, saddle shoes, and chunky visor sunglasses.

3 Akane Tendo’s Pinafore Dress Is One Of Many ’90s Looks

Akane Tendo Ranma 1/2 has short pixie-cut hair with heavy bangs and a flowy blue dress with a bell-sleeved white blouse underneath. Though the dress and shirt are technically her school uniform, the pinafore dress was incredibly popular at the time, and it fits her character in a very sweet way.

Akane’s dress is so pretty and billowy that she looks like she’s ready to go pick a bouquet of flowers. Pinafore dresses are so versatile and flattering that they’re starting to make a strong comeback.

2 Yusuke Urameshi Layers His Clothes To Perfection

Yu Yu Hakusho

No one could layer quite like Yusuke Urameshi in Yu Yu Hakusho. All the main characters in the series have excellent fashion and outfits they cycle through often, but Yusuke’s ensembles will always be the best.

Nothing surpasses the outfit he throws together with his bright green bomber jacket with the red collar and lining. He wears a yellow cropped sweater and a red flannel shirt beneath the jacket, paired with baggy light wash jeans and black squared sunglasses. So many colors shouldn’t go well together, but the pastel mixed with the brights and the plaid all find a way to form one of the best casual ensembles in anime.

1 The Sailor Scouts Day Wear Reigns Supreme

Sailor Moon

Scouts in their '90s streetwear in Sailor Moon.

There is no singular Sailor Scout who has the best fashion in Sailor Moon. Each one of the Sailor Scouts has immaculate taste in streetwear, leisurewear, and evening wear. The Scouts change up their colors depending on the time of year. When it’s colder, they wear warm-toned blazers, cardigans, and tights. Summers are for pastel crop tops, shorts, and sundresses.

Rei’s best outfit is her magenta overalls paired with a white sweatshirt. Usagi has too many amazing outfits to choose even a few; her taste in rompers alone is unparalleled. Minako pairs sweaters with long circle skirts in a way that will hopefully never go out of style.
