BRONX, N.Y. – A licensed social worker and psychotherapist with a wealth of experience in the field, Dina Stella, M.Ed, LMSW, has joined Fordham Athletics in a counseling role.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Dina to the Fordham Athletics family,” said Athletic Director Ed Kull.  “We truly appreciate Dina’s willingness to be a resource to our 500-plus student-athletes as they navigate challenges both on and off the fields of competition.”

Trained in trauma systems and cognitive behavioral therapy, Stella holds a master’s degree in educational psychology from Temple University and a master’s in social work from Lehman College.  She also boasts extensive experience in child welfare, having worked in foster care settings and with court-adjudicated youth.

Stella is staff member in the University’s Office of Counseling and Psychological Services. At the helm of CPS is Dr. Jeffrey Ng, who joined Fordham in 2008 after working at New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health.  He completed his doctorate in clinical psychology from Rutgers after completing his undergraduate studies at Cornell.  Ng is also an avid sports fans and supporter of Fordham Athletics.

“Today’s student-athletes have more responsibilities and obligations than ever before,” continued Kull.  “It is our duty as administrators and coaches to support them in every way possible.  We cannot thank the staffs at Counseling and Psychological Services and SportStrata enough for all their hard work in championing our Rams’ mental health with the highest levels of professionalism and respect.”

Since 2017, Fordham has partnered with SportStrata to deliver top-tier psychological services to Fordham student-athletes.  Directly assisting Fordham athletes are two former Division I athletes: Liv Massey, M. Ed, MHC and Amanda Fazio, MS.  Both Massey and Fazio attended Bucknell, where the former was a track & field standout and the latter earned First Team All-Patriot League honors with the softball team.  Fazio later went on to join the softball coaching staff at the University of Tennessee.

Massey and Fazio are available for both in-person and virtual sessions with Fordham student-athletes in need of services.

SportStrata, which also serves a wide range of industries outside of athletics, is led by Dr. Jonathan Fader, the former team psychologist for the New York Mets and New York Giants.

Additionally, a trio of senior administrators within Fordham Athletics is tasked with spearheading the department’s mental health and student-athlete development efforts:  Senior Executive Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Welfare & Competitive Excellence/SWA Makini Thompson, Senior Associate Athletic Director for Strategic Initiatives and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Jordan Bowles, and Senior Associate Athletic Director for Sports Performance Joe Gilfedder.
