Holi is a festival that marks the beginning of spring season in India, the end of winter. For many, it is a joyous day to socialise with others, have fun and laugh, forget and forgive, and mend strained bonds.
The ceremony also serves as an invocation for a prosperous spring harvest. It begins on the evening of the Purnima (Full Moon Day), which happens in the Hindu calendar month of Phalguna, which corresponds to the middle of March in the Gregorian calendar. It lasts for a night and a day. Holika Dahan or Chhoti Holi is the name given to the first evening, and Holi, Rangwali Holi, Dol Purnima, Manjal Kuli, Dhulandi, Ukuli, Yaosang, Shigmo, Phagwah, or Jajiri is the name given to the second day .

Holi festivities begin on the full moon evening.

The festivities for Holi begin with the Holika Dahan ceremony the night before Holi, when people assemble to perform religious rites in front of a bonfire and pray for the destruction of their inner sins, just as Holika, the sister of the demon king Hiranyakashipu, was killed in the flames. The following morning is Rangwali Holi (Dhuleti), when people smear and douse one another in colour. Everyone and anywhere is considered fair game while using water cannons and water-filled balloons to play and colour each other. Drums and other musical instruments are frequently carried by groups as they move around singing and dancing. They visit family members throughout the day, and everyone gathers to socialise, talk, eat, and have fun.

There are several stories associated with Holi celebrations. One such story is that demon king Hirankashyapu’s sister Holika, who had the boon of being immune to fire, was burnt alive on a pyre when she dared to kill the innocent Bhakt Prahalad.

The Holi festival is a traditional Hindu holiday that is marked by customs. During Chandragupta II’s rule in the fourth century, it is described by the poet Kalidasa, Dasakumara Charita, and the Puranas. The Sanskrit drama Ratnavali from the seventh century mentions Holi as well.

Happy Holi 2023 Quotes

The social element during Holi is the uniting or “embracing” of the great and the small, of the rich and the poor. It is also the uniting of equals. The festival teaches us to “let the dead bury the dead”. We should forget the outgoing year’s ill-feelings and begin the new year with feelings of love, sympathy, co-operation and equality with all. We should try to feel this oneness or unity with the Self also.

Holi also means “sacrifice”. Burn all the impurities of the mind, such as egoism, vanity and lust, through the fire of devotion and knowledge. Ignite cosmic love, mercy, generosity, selflessness, truthfulness and purity through the fire of Yogic practice. This is the real spirit of Holi. Rise from the mire of stupidity and absurdity and dive deep into the ocean of divinity.

The call of Holi is to always keep ablaze the light of God-love shining in your heart. Inner illumination is the real Holi. The spring season is the manifestation of the Lord, according to the Bhagavad Gita. Holi is said to be His heart.
