NEW DELHI: Star cricketer Rishabh Pant had a miraculous escape on Friday as his luxury car crashed into a road divider and caught fire after he dozed off at the wheel on the Delhi-Dehradun highway in the early hours of Friday.
The accident took place around 5.30am when Pant was on his way to his hometown to surprise his mother.

Here’s how the series of events unfolded …

  1. According to police, the star wicketkeeper batsman, who was alone in his Mercedes GLE car, dozed off and hit the divider railings on the highway at around 5.30am.
  2. The car turned a few times before turning into a ball of fire. The CCTV footage of the accident, which has surfaced online, indicated that it was a high-speed crash.
  3. Pant jumped out of car by breaking the window as soon as it caught fire. As he landed on the side of the road on his rear, some of the skin got peeled off.
  4. Meanwhile, the driver and other staff of a Haryana Roadways bus passing by helped the cricketer get away from the burning car, which was completely charred in the accident.
  5. According to reports, the driver of the bus said he was the first to rush to the spot along with his conductor to rescue Pant. He added that he didn’t recognize the cricketer at first. “We began to cry for help but no one came. I called the National Highway, no one answered. Then I ran up the police and the conductor called for an ambulance. We kept asking him he is he fine. Offered him some water. After regrouping, he told us he is Rishabh Pant. I don’t follow cricket so I didn’t know who he was but my conductor then told me ‘Sushil… he is an India cricketer’,” he was quoted as saying.
  6. The 25-year-old was rushed to Saksham hospital in nearby Rookee from where he was referred later to Max Hospital, Dehradun. Dr Sushil Nagar, who treated Pant in emergency, said the cricketer didn’t suffer any fracture but there was a ligament injury on his knee which would require further investigation.
  7. “When he was brought to our hospital, he was fully conscious and I spoke to him. He wanted to surprise his mother and was going back home,” Nagar told PTI.
  8. Later, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said that Pant has suffered two cuts on his forehead, apart from a ligament tear in his right knee, abrasion injuries on back, and hurting right wrist, ankle, and toe.
  9. BCCI secretary Jay Shah said the cricketer’s condition remains stable, and he has now been shifted to Max Hospital where he will undergo MRI scans to ascertain the extent of his injuries and formulate his further course of treatment.
  10. Management of Max Hospital, Dehradun, where he is undergoing treatment said that a team of doctors are currently “holding an evaluation for any possible internal injury.”
