Never said who will lead or become PM: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge calls for opposition unity | India News

NEW DELHI: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday once again called for opposition unity ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. “All like-minded opposition parties should come together against the divisive forces,” he said.
Kharge indicated that the question of a PM candidate of such a bloc was ‘not the question’. “I never said who will lead or who will become PM. It’s not the question. We want to fight together unitedly, this is our desire,” he said during his address at a DMK event to mark the 70th birthday of the party president and chief and Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin.
“Congress-DMK alliance in Tamil Nadu led to Loksabha victory in 2004 and 2009. We should continue to strenghten our alliance,” Kharge added.
Taking a dig at the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Congress president said that even when the common man is hit by inflation BJP is interested in polarising the society to win elections.
“More than 23 crore people have been pushed below the poverty line because of the BJP government’s failure. The common man is hit by inflation, youth is hit by unemployment but BJP is interested in polarising the society to win elections,” he added.
Agreeing with Kharge’s call for opposition unity, Stalin said that political parties should rise above differences and stand together as a united force to defeat the BJP in the upcoming election.
“Thoughts for the third front are pointless. I humbly request all political parties, opposed to BJP, to understand the simple electoral arithmetic logic and stand united,” the DMK president said.
The Tamil Nadu chief minister said it’s not just the stage of his birthday celebration but also the beginning of a huge political stage.
“It’s not just the stage of my birthday celebrations. It’s also the beginning of a huge political stage in India. I thank Mallikarjun Kharge for the best birthday present, by creating a common platform. The 2024 elections is not about who wins, it’s about who should be defeated,” he added.
