Noted Flint fashion designer Tyrone Kirkland dies at 56

FLINT, MI — A Flint man who made a name in the fashion industry, gaining widespread attention, has died at age 56.

Tyrone Kirkland died Dec. 31, according to his obituary.

Kirkland was just 21 in 1988 when he was hired to produce gowns for the Ebony Fashion Fair. His designs appeared on the runway alongside creations by Bill Blass, Christian Dior and Gianni Versace, according to a 2004 MLive article.

Later, he became known for his Flint fashion shop TKO Designs.

He was well known for designing fashions — and making the dresses — for high school prom attendees and brides.

“His signature business, T.K.O. Designs, made local, national, and international waves for the fashion industry as his unique and one-of kind designs were seen on supermodels, celebrities, on television commercials, runways, magazines, and newspapers around the states,” according to his obituary. “If you got a TKO design, you were the showstopper for whatever room you entered. His slogan was this, ‘For the best in unique and custom-tailored designs just call…Tyrone!’”

A funeral service is planned for 11 a.m. Jan. 7 at Hand of God Ministries, 3408 Miller Road, Flint.
