RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Special Rodeo held by Monument Health provides different rodeo activities that accommodate to individuals of all ages with disabilities.
Activities at the rodeo included face painting, dummy roping, stick-horse barrel racing, animals to pet and a bucking barrel.
Volunteers:
Each participant paired up with two volunteers. There was a number of organizations and people there to help with the event including:
“So, my daughter, Abby, she works with SunCatcher and volunteers for therapeutic riding. And my husband, Neil, came last year and worked with the horses to give side-along rides. My son, Luke, is helping with the roping and Ashley is helping with face painting,” Cristina Sanders, pediatric physiatrist at Monument Health, said. “Children in the community who have different ability levels can come and feel a part of something.”
One horse:
Due to the icy conditions, SunCatcher Therapeutic Riding Academy wasn’t able to bring in their horses because of the risk of injury.
However, a volunteer knew someone at the Black Hills Stock Show who had a horse, and he brought him in for kids to pet.
“They were all smiles when they come up and see us, and it’s nice getting to see that,” Tate Luedke, 20, of Caputa, said.
