Vehicles without high-security number plates to be fined in UP starting today

Vehicles without high-security registration plates (HSRP) will be fined a sum of Rs 5,000 in the state of Uttar Pradesh starting today. The Noida Traffic Police is launching a drive to crack down on vehicles that do not yet sport an HSRP. A similar drive will be carried out in Ghaziabad. In a letter to police chiefs of districts in UP, Uttar Pradesh Police has directed the initiation of an enforcement drive and to impose fines on defaulters.
High-security registration plates are mandatory in India. All vehicles sold before April 2019 are to be installed with HSRPs. The mandate was introduced with the aim to improve security and culling car theft.

In a letter to the police chiefs, UP’s additional DG (traffic and road safety) Anupam Kulshreshtha stated that a separate period was allotted for the installation of HSRPs in different categories of registered vehicles, and today (15 February) this prescribed period ends.
Meanwhile, Noida’s DCP (traffic) Anil Kumar Yadav said, “The traffic department will abide by the direction and from February 16, a fine of Rs 5,000 for faulty number plates will be imposed on all vehicles without HSRPs.”

Minister of state for transport (independent charge) Dayashanker Singh has directed enforcement officers of his department to slap fines on vehicles plying without high-security plates.
“There are increasing complaints of vehicles plying with wrong number plates or replaced number plates,” the minister said. He has asked the enforcement officers to seek help from the traffic police in the checking drives.
