ACA national deadline closes, but some NY deadlines extended

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The national open enrollment period for marketplace health insurance began in November 2022 and ended on Jan. 15.

“The good news is in New York State that deadline has actually been recently extended,” said Andy Napierala, vice president of Medicare and individual market sales for Excellus BlueCross BlueShield.

New York’s public health emergency, which was enacted during the pandemic, has been extended until April.

“So people have the opportunity if they need to sign up for new coverage, that open enrollment period has been extended to April,” Napierala said.

According to Excellus BlueCross Blushield, New York state is one of the only states in the country to expand Medicaid eligibility and the essential health plan, in an effort to make coverage as accessible and affordable to as many people as possible.

“We would encourage people to always have coverage based on their needs,” said Napierala.

It would allow more access to health insurance for those who need it most.

“Anyone who doesn’t have coverage available through an employer, as an example, has the opportunity to purchase their own coverage through the New York state of health or sometimes directly with an insurance carrier,” Napierala said.

Excellus BlueCross BlueShield also encourages individuals to look at their coverage every year and update it based on their needs and health coverage anticipations.

“What we’d encourage people to do again every year, you want to take a look at your coverage to make sure that you’re in the right plan based on your income eligibility and to make sure you’re in the right plan based on your coverage needs,” Napierala said.
