You are listening to the Expresso Entertainment Update. Here is the latest news from the world of Bollywood brought to you by The Indian Express.
Let’s begin with our top story. Shah Rukh Khan returns to the screens after four long years with Siddharth Anand’s Pathaan today. Also starring Deepika Padukone, John Abraham, Dimple Kapadia and Ashutosh Rana, the film is a part of YRF’s spy universe. Salman Khan is expected to have an extended cameo in the film and Shah Rukh had previously confirmed that the two actors shot together for the Siddharth Anand directorial. In Pathaan, Shah Rukh Khan plays a RAW agent who returns to duty after a sabbatical when John Abraham’s character, Jim poses a threat to the nation. Pathaan is expected to see a rise in footfalls tomorrow because of Republic Day.
“Meanwhile, Shah Rukh Khan indulged in a virtual interaction with his fans on Tuesday, 24th January. The fans also got to see his warmth towards his friends, as he tweeted words of praise for his contemporary Ajay Devgn.
Ajay’s upcoming film Bholaa’s second teaser dropped earlier in the day. While speaking to the media, he mentioned Pathaan’s ‘fantastic opening’, and how it makes him happy. A fan shared the same clip with Shah Rukh and asked him for his response.
King Khan replied to the post and wrote – “Ajay has been a pillar of support and love to me and my family for years. He is a wonderful actor and a beautiful human being.”””
“Speaking of the second teaser of actor Ajay Devgn’s Bholaa, the Hindi remake of the acclaimed Tamil hit Kaithi also features Tabu playing a pivotal role of a cop.
The teaser shows high-octane action sequences, woven into the emotional narrative of a father reuniting with his daughter– only after overcoming a series of dangerous challenges and beating bad men to a pulp. Bholaa is another name for Lord Shiva, the god of destruction, and it is a recurring theme in the teaser. Bholaa will also be the ninth film of Ajay and Tabu, who have previously shared screen space in several films including their last blockbuster release, Drishyam 2.”
Meanwhile, at a press conference for Bholaa in Mumbai on Tuesday, 24th January, Tabu opened up about her experience of being directed by her frequent collaborator, Ajay Devgn. She said, “When he’s directing, Ajay is a different human being. He was not the Ajay Devgn that I’ve known for so many years. He was someone else altogether. He doesn’t talk to anyone. He neither laughs nor smiles. As it is, he talks and laughs less, but when he is a director, you cannot go to him at all.” Tabu also shared that Ajay was a very “technically sound” filmmaker and looks at things with an “actor perspective”. Bholaa is scheduled to release in theatres on March 30.
Moving on. Alia Bhatt showered praises on her husband and actor Ranbir Kapoor after the trailer launch of his upcoming movie Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar. Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, 24th January, the Gangubai Kathiawadi actor shared the trailer video along with a caption – “Truly one of my most favourite trailers!” The trailer of the Luv Ranjan directorial dropped on Monday, 23rd January and showcased the crackling chemistry between Ranbir and Shraddha Kapoor, stunning visuals and hilarious dialogues. Popular stand-up comedian Anubhav Singh Bassi is also part of the film’s cast as he is making his Bollywood debut. Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar will release in theatres on Holi, March 8.
“Filmmaker Sudhir Mishra’s upcoming directorial venture Afwaah, starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Bhumi Pednekar, is set to release theatrically on February 24. Billed as a quirky thriller, the movie is produced by Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series and filmmaker Anubhav Sinha’s Benaras Mediaworks.
Mishra said Afwaah highlights an important issue and he is looking forward to the audience’s reaction. The director said – “”The super-talented combo of Bhumi and Nawaz have given their best to this unconventional story and I am sure the audience is going to love it.”” Actors Sharib Hashmi, Sumit Kaul, Sumeet Vyas, Rockey Raina and TJ Bhanu round out the cast. “
Director Pan Nalin’s Gujarati language coming-of-age drama Chhello Show (Last Film Show) did not score a nomination in the Best International Feature category at the 95th Academy Awards. The nominations were announced Tuesday evening, 24th January by actor Allison Williams and actor-producer Riz Ahmed. Chhello Show was famously chosen over the fan-favourite Telugu blockbuster RRR as India’s official selection in the category, despite not having played at any major film festivals or having any sort of momentum behind it. It also attracted controversy when similarities were drawn between its plot and that of the Italian classic Cinema Paradiso. The film was presented by producer Siddharth Roy Kapur and received a brief theatrical run before debuting on Netflix.
“Lastly, ahead of the release of Gandhi Godse: Ek Yudh, filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi on Monday, 23rd January, wrote to the Special Commissioner of Police, Mumbai, requesting additional security for him and his family, claiming that he has been receiving repeated threats after a press conference for the film. Set in post-independence India of 1947-48, Gandhi Godse: Ek Yudh depicts the war of ideologies between Nathuram Godse and Mahatma Gandhi. The trailer showcased a powerful glimpse into the tumultuous period following India’s partition.
Following the trailer release of the period drama film, Congress sought a ban on the film in Madhya Pradesh.”
