Lady Buffs Travel to Lawton for Thursday Night LSC Action

CANYON, Texas – The Lady Buffs continue their road swing on Thursday night as they head to Lawton, Oklahoma for Lone Star Conference divisional action against the Cameron Aggies with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m. inside of Aggie Gym.

UTT RECAP
The Patriots of UT Tyler shot 64.3% in the first half as they led by 27 points at the break on their way to a 76-54 Lone Star Conference crossover victory over the then #17 Lady Buffs on Saturday afternoon at the Herrington Patriot Center in Tyler, Texas.

Thabach diving led the way for the Lady Buffs as the junior from Boise, Idaho went 7-of-10 from the floor including 1-of-4 from deep and 6-of-6 from the free throw line for a team-high 21 points to go along with six rebounds, one assist and one steal. Lauren Taylor chipped in 10 points as the senior guard went 4-of-11 from the floor to go along with eight boards, one assist and two steals.

A LOOK AT THE AGGIES
The Aggies enter the weekend with an overall record of 9-10 with a 6-7 mark in Lone Star Conference action following a 64-59 loss to the Arkansas-Fort Smith Lady Lions last Saturday in Lawton. The Aggies are 6-2 so far this season inside of Aggie Gym.

Korie Allensworth leads the way offensively for the Aggies as the sophomore guard from Sulpher, Oklahoma has gone 80-of-174 (46%) from the floor including 23-of-65 (35.4%) from behind the arc and 40-of-58 (69%) from the free throw line to average 11.7 points per game to go along with 72 rebounds (12 offensive, 60 defensive), 22 assists, 22 steals and one block.


Cameron finished the 2021-22 campaign with an overall record of 17-11 with a 11-5 mark in LSC action as they advanced to the quarterfinal round of the LSC Championship. The Aggies picked up a 88-85 home win over Eastern New Mexico before falling to Texas A&M-Commerce, 80-65 at the Comerica Center.

CU HEAD COACH JEFF MAHONEY
Jeff Mahoney was named the head coach of the Aggie women’s basketball program in May of 2022 after three seasons as the assistant coach. While on the bench for Cameron, Mahoney helped the Aggies to 41 wins, including 17 in 2022, the most in 20 years. In addition to his time as the assistant coach for the women, Mahoney also took the reins of the men’s team halfway through the 2021-22 season.

THE SERIES
Sunday afternoon will mark the 55th all-time meeting on the hardwood between the Lady Buffs and Aggies as WT holds a 49-5 advantage in the series that dates back to 1982. The Lady Buffs are 20-4 all-time inside of Aggie Gym as they have dropped their last two trips to Lawton.

WBCA DIVISION II TOP-25 POLL

Ashland picked up all 23 first place votes for a total of 575 points to remain atop of the poll followed by Drury (548), Tampa (516), Texas Woman’s (470), Glenville State (458), Cal State Dominguez Hills (454), Central Missouri (432), Grand Valley State (408), Eckerd (365) and Minnesota Duluth (355) to round out the top ten. The South Central Region was represented by Texas Woman’s (4th), Colorado School of Mines (14th), Angelo State (25th) and West Texas A&M (RV).

WT HEAD COACH JOSH PROCK
Josh Prock enters his second season at the helm of the Lady Buff Basketball program after guiding WT to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight during his first season in Maroon & White, finishing the campaign with an overall record of 26-11 as WT claimed the LSC Regular Season and Tournament Titles followed by a run to the South Central Regional Championship.

HOME SWEET HOME

West Texas A&M is home to one of the finest multi-purpose facilities in the country as the First United Bank Center has served as the home of the Lady Buffs since January 26, 2002. The Lady Buffs are a staggering 268-37 inside of the FUBC during that time for a winning clip of 87.7%. WT has averaged 1,025 fans per contest since the facility opened its doors with the largest crowd coming on Opening Night with 4,941 members of Buff Nation seeing the Lady Buffs take on rival Abilene Christian.

LSC BASKETBALL PRESEASON POLL

The Lady Buffs picked up 31 of the possible 39 first place votes for a total of 612 points to sit atop of the poll followed by Lubbock Christian (four first place, 557), Texas Woman’s (four first place, 538), Angelo State (519), UT Tyler (479), Texas A&M-Kingsville (408), Texas A&M International (371), Cameron (347), Midwestern State (314), Eastern New Mexico (233), St. Edward’s (219), UAFS (216), UT Permian Basin (172), Oklahoma Christian (154), St. Mary’s (94) and Western New Mexico (71).

The 2022-23 LSC basketball schedule will feature 16 women’s teams in two divisions. Each team will play a double round-robin schedule within their division. Additionally, teams will play eight crossover competitions against the opposite division for a total of 22 LSC games.

HOME OF CHAMPIONS

West Texas A&M is home to one of the most successful athletic programs in all of Division II.


The 2021-22 campaign saw WT claimed six Lone Star Conference Championships, three LSC Tournament crowns, two Regional Championships and four Top-5 track and field finishes including the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Women’s National Championship. 2022-23 has already started off on a high-note as WT Volleyball claimed the program’s fourth National Title in early December.
