Loewe and Studio Ghibli Strike Again

All good things must come to an end. That boozy work-break over the Christmas period; Jennifer Coolidge’s tenure on White Lotus; that tempting introductory gym offer (which lures you into a six-month non-release contract that you’ll quickly want to escape, but we digress). Still, in the case of hypey brand collaborations, you can be reminded of that limited-edition moment forever. You just have to cop yourself a piece quickly enough.

Just like all those other little joys, one of the best film-meets-fashion projects is coming to an end. Make a note within your calendars, as 1 February marks the release of Loewe and Studio Ghibli’s final partnership. Having already envisioned Spirited Away and My Neighbour Totoro characters into clothing, its last instalment celebrates another anime classic, Howl’s Moving Castle. An adventure story that involves sorcery, transitional homes and unimaginable environments, this cult classic should be on everyone’s must-watch lists.

Whether you’re Hayao Miyazaki superfan or not – this film is reportedly the director’s favourite – there’s plenty within this capsule to feast your eyes on. The Juergen Teller campaign, for a start, stars Taylor Russell alongside renowned supermodels and with a surprise appearance from an amiable sheep. There’s the collection, ranging from feather-embellished leather jackets to 3D emblematic keyrings, all of which takes inspiration from the film’s main characters, as well as the fire demon Calcifer, Markl, Heen and Turnip Head.

Better yet, you can have a taste of the film’s universe in real life through Selfridges’ immersive experience. As well as a residency within its Corner Shop, you can have a feast within Calcifer’s Kitchen, conceptualised by Balbosté at Dolly’s, and reacquaint (or introduce) yourself through film screenings in The Selfridge’s Cinema. Plus, you can pop over to the retailer’s exhibition space on Edward Mews to enter The Cloud Room, inside you’ll find original Studio Ghibli sketches, a behind the scenes view of the campaign and the opportunity to learn about the artistry that goes into the Moving Castle bag.

As the fashion house and animation studio close this chapter with a bang, this collaboration isn’t one to miss. But be warned, if the last two are anything to go by, have your bank card at the ready as it’s likely to sell out fast.

LOEWE x Howl’s Moving Castle opens at Selfridges London from 1st to 25th of February, and is available to buy from Selfridges.com.
