3rd-year IIT-Madras student dies by suicide; second incident in a month | Chennai News

CHENNAI: A third-year student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras allegedly died by suicide in his hostel room on Tuesday morning.
The deceased, identified as V Vaipu Pushpak Sree Sai (20), hailed from Andhra Pradesh. He was a student of electrical engineering.

According to the police, Sree Sai was staying in the Alaknanda hostel inside the IIT campus. On Monday morning he did not turn up to class. Around 11.30 am, his friends reached his room to check on him.
“The door was locked from the inside and the students broke open the door when they found Sree Sai dead,” an investigation officer said.
Based on the information, the Kotturpuram police rushed to the hostel, and they sent the student’s body to the Government Royapettah Hospital for postmortem.
Police have registered a case. The investigators said that there was no suicide note recovered from the student’s possession.
According to a statement from IIT, Madras, the post-covid era has been difficult.
“A standing Institute Internal Inquiry Committee, including elected student representatives, who have been recently constituted will look into such incidents,” said IIT management.
Earlier in February, a research scholar from Maharashtra, Stephen Sunny killed himself in his room on February 14, while another student was admitted to the hospital in critical condition after attempting suicide.
This is the 14th suicide in the past 10 years.
