Kiran was the last CM of undivided AP. He had assumed charge on November 11, 2010, and resigned on March 10, 2014, in protest against the Congress’s decision to bifurcate the state.

After the state was bifurcated, he floated a regional party – Jai Samaikyandhra Party – on March 12, 2014, and contested the subsequent elections. After his party’s humiliating defeat in the 2014 general elections, Kiran remained silent in politics for some time before returning to the Congress fold on July 13, 2018.
However, even after joining the Congress, he remained inactive in the party.
