— Following its bankruptcy filing at the end of November, MEnD has sent a letter to Kandiyohi County, saying it will no longer be able to provide correctional health care services at the county jail within the next 90 days.
The letter is on the agenda for the Kandiyohi County Board meeting, which will take place at 9 a .m. Tuesday in the boardroom of the county Health and Human Services building in Willmar.
MEnD has been dealing with lawsuits and reports of inadequate care to inmates. Its owner, Dr. Todd Leonard, had his medical license suspended in January 2022 by the state medical board due to Leonard’s actions in regard to the death of an inmate in Beltrami County.
The letter to the Kandiyohi County Board said that while MEnD will try to provide adequate care during the 90-day notice period, which began Dec. 1, it would be in the county’s best interest to find a new provider as soon as possible. That 90-day period will end Feb. 28, 2023.
Also on the board agenda are a request from Emergency Management and the Rescue Squad to purchase heavy extrication equipment; the annual aquatic invasive species prevention update; a continued discussion about a local housing trust fund; and the setting of the county commissioner salary for 2023.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is asking the board to pass a resolution supporting the DNR purchase of 36 acres of land in New London Township for a Wildlife Management Area.
The Tuesday meeting is also the last meeting for outgoing Commissioner Rollie Nissen. He has served on the board for two terms.
