The storms this weekend brought white-out conditions to the Sierra Nevada, impacting and forcing the closure of several highways, including Interstate 80, which reopened early Sunday after back-to-back weekend closures.
Government agencies and trustworthy Twitter accounts managed by residents have been updating their feeds with the latest information on road and weather conditions.
Twitter followers can turn on their push notifications for specific accounts.
Here’s a list of accounts to follow:
• @CaltransDist3: Caltrans District 3 maintains and operates highways in several counties in Northern California and across the Sierra Nevada, including Butte, Colusa, El Dorado, Glenn, Nevada, Placer, Sacramento, Sierra, Sutter, Yolo and Yuba.
• @CHP_Truckee: The California Highway Patrol in Truckee (Nevada County) has been posting updates on chain controls and road closures.
• @NWSSacramento: The National Weather Service in Sacramento is a go-to resource for the latest information on the snow and rainfall impacting Northern California and the Sierra Nevada, including watches, warnings and advisories.
• @i80chains: The account Interstate 80 Tahoe is considered to be one of the most reliable feeds relaying information on road conditions, managed by Twitter user @toxic who says they use data from Caltrans for their updates. There is also a website at www.chainguy.com.
